Why to take Vitamin D All year round
Most people assume that if you live somewhere sunny, your vitamin D is fine. It is not that simple, and this is exactly what I see in my functional medicine practice every day.
Here is the truth about why so many of us are still deficient even in the sun:
We spend most of our time indoors. Air conditioning in Sunshine states like Florida and Texas is basically a survival tool, which means actual sun exposure is minimal for most people.
Sunscreen does its job a little too well. High SPF products block the specific UVB rays your skin needs to convert cholesterol into vitamin D. Even if you are outside, covered in SPF 50, your skin is not making much.
Gut issues block absorption. If you have leaky gut, low stomach acid, or poor fat digestion, you can take vitamin D and still not absorb it properly. This is the root cause piece most people miss.
Magnesium deficiency makes it worse. Your body needs magnesium to activate vitamin D. Most Americans are low in both.
Darker skin tones need significantly more sun exposure to produce the same amount as lighter skin.
Low vitamin D is linked to fatigue, mood issues, poor immune function, hormone imbalance, and chronic inflammation all things that look like other problems and get treated with band aids instead of root cause solutions.
I test vitamin D on every single patient, and it is almost always low. Not just low by standard lab ranges either — functional medicine targets are much higher.
